Using "Add a New Disk" as you recommended and then selecting only the system partition to restore to it still doesn't allow me to select it. After that, restore the newly created full disk image back to your system, and import any registry settings you need from the exported registry files saved on the USB drive. Boot it up and save whatever registry settings you need by exporting the registry items to a file, or files, on your USB drive. If you can get the restore to work, (try doing the restore without selecting the MBR/Track 0), you could use a bootable utility disk containing a remote registry editor (third party or free tools) to open the registry on the restored USB drive, and export the settings you need.Īnother option would be to back up the current system by creating a new full disk image, with validation, to the USB drive (using your Acronis Rescue Media), and then restoring the older backup to your system. These issues aside, you will not be able to boot to the drive if it is connected via USB, as Windows does not allow booting to USB connected disks. Because you are creating the partitions in Windows after using the tool, Acronis may not see this as a viable location to use as a destination.
Acronis will create the partition structure when doing the restore. Leave it in the "un-allocated" state after running the "Add a new disk" tool. When using the tool "Add a new disk", you do not need to create any partitions or use Windows to format the drive. Please help me get restored onto the USB hard drive so that I can boot the old system from it. I played with the "Partition Size" to no avial. I open "New Location" and my USB disk is greyed out as is everything else except my main system partition. On restore I choose "Recover Whole.", select the main C: partition and MBR and Track 0 in the hopes that will make the target bootable.
It's single partition is smaller than the backed up C: partition but whats used in the backed up partition it is much less than the size of the USB disk partition. I "Add a New Disk" the USB disk with TI and then formatted it with Win Disk Manager.
(Trying to recover from a really nasty virus that did a whole lot to make that recovery impossible.) The backup is too old to replace my system except for the crucial registry data I need. I have Acronis True Image Home 2010 ('cause as I remember there are forward compatibility issues) and need to restore a backup's C: and MBR partitions to a USB hard drive so that I can boot it and get Registry information from it and that can only be obtained from a booted Win system.
